To the east of Argentat, not far from Cantal, the captivating Tours de Merle await you...
Here we are in Xaintrie, a region with 3 rivers: the Dordogne, the Cere and the Maronne. The path of the water has patiently dug gorges where the vegetation has since reasserted itself, sometimes revealing mysterious vestiges, such as the Tours de Merle. Here you are in a rather unique place: a former co-lordship, that is to say that several lords lived here in shared accommodation! 7 towers make " the size " (you suspect that the challenge was to have the highest?), the place is classified as Historic Monuments. There's a lot going on in the summer, the site is open from April to November. You can visit it on your own or with a guided tour (which we recommend). A treasure hunt and a puzzle game are organized on site. All the natural environment around the Tours de Merle is attractive. The fauna and flora are to be protected here: bats and birds of prey inhabit these places which have remained intact and very well preserved. The site also consists of a small farm and a medieval-style garden. Don't miss the nature and medieval activities, the workshops... Prepare your visit using the Tours de Merle website.
About 7 kilometers away, only 2 square towers remain of the Carbonnières Towers, which can be discovered with a path (free and free). The medieval farms of Xaintrie are 13 km to the north and it is a place that we warmly recommend! 12 ha of open-air eco-museum (be careful outside the summer period, you have to call to book). We discover the atmosphere of the countryside in the Middle Ages through carefully reconstructed houses and farms, furnished, with barnyard animals, it's a living place! Still a little to the north, the Castle of Rilhac Xaintrie, which dates from the 14th century, has been renovated and opened to visitors (for a derisory sum) for lovers of beautiful heritage. It is attached to a pretty listed park.
