Saint-Robert is a pretty little village built on a hill. A visit will be quick as it's not very large, but the view is well worth the detour, and the beautiful stately homes bear witness to the village's rich past. Overlooking the Brive plain, Saint-Robert is a pleasant and peaceful detour.

The history and past of Saint-Robert, to understand its present

The village was born and built around a Benedictine priory in 1122. Only the church remains, yet the presence of this holy place allowed the village to flourish. Not far from Brive-la-Gaillarde, Saint-Robert offers a view of Ayen and the Yssandonnais region, particularly from the small garden behind the church. We are not far from the Dordogne (the department), and this is significant, since, situated between Périgord and Limousin, Saint-Robert was well-positioned to block passage between the two. This is why the village is fortified ! You will see this in the church 's defensive appearance, but also in the arched gateway, which marks one of the town's former entrances when it was surrounded by ramparts in the Middle Ages.

The 12th- century Romanesque church has been restored. Right next to it, the small Chapel of Verneuil, when open, hosts an exhibition of vintage postcards. Bearing the same name, the Château de Verneuil belonged to a noble family of the town and region. Saint-Robert was the fief of the Noailles family, among others, as evidenced by the bourgeois-style residences, such as the 14th- century Château d'Aragon. Stone vaulted cellars, remarkable windows (with mullions, for example), old staircases, and dovecotes are also noteworthy features.

Why cellars in Saint-Robert ? There is wine on the slopes of the hills of the Yssandonnais! And Saint-Robert was a wine-growing village, before the phylloxera which considerably reduced wine production in the region.
