Turenne is nestled on the slope of a hill, this pretty village soars towards the sky, with a dungeon at its summit! Turenne is one of the Most Beautiful Villages of France, it is the cachet of its steep streets, dotted with mansions with slate roofs, its small shops, its warm and almost intimate atmosphere and of course, the view from the César tower, which deserves this distinction.
The splendor of Turenne is due to its history, it is a former Vicomté, powerful and independent. It was to control the Anglo-Saxon expansion at the time of the remarriage of Eleanor of Aquitaine with the future King of England, that the King of France Saint Louis, granted particular rights to this Viscount, which even beat its own currency. The architecture spans from the 13th to the 18th century, you will appreciate the many turrets topped with slate, some hide stalls where you can find local and local products, or local crafts. If you are afraid of not being able to climb to the very top of the village, know that in season, a small train takes you on board every 30 minutes so that everyone can enjoy the landscape. Maps of the city to facilitate the visit are available at the Tourist Office. Here is a plan booklet games (fr) to visit the village with the children!
Visit the Turenne Castle to climb to the top of the César Tower, but also visit the pretty garden, see the guard room, take advantage of guided tours in season, all for a small price.
Good to know: 3 long-distance hiking trails cross the village of Turenne, it really is a place for backpackers!
