Allassac is a pretty town which has known prosperity thanks to the cultivation of the vine, its wine and the exploitation of the slate, which today elegantly covers the roofs of the houses. It is a large town, we suggest a walk in its center, but do not hesitate to stroll through its towns and walk on its natural sites and along the Vézère.

Visit of Allassac and its medieval architecture

Occupied since Antiquity, Allassac is ideally located, in height, at a crossroads of several attractive regions. For modern tourism, it is for example the possibility while staying there, to go for a walk towards Périgord on one side, the Brivois basin on the other, the region of Tulle and the north of the department, wilder when we follow the Vézère Valley. Allassac is part of the Agglomeration Community of the Brive Basin. The weekly market takes place on Friday morning and is well stocked: Allassac is a land of delicacies where you can discover the specialties of Corrèze and nearby Périgord.

The visit can begin at the Caesar Tower (MH), it dates from the 13th century and is a vestige of one of the residences of the powerful feudal Camborn family. It measures no less than 30 m in height, you can't miss it! It consists of 6 floors, built in local stones. It can be visited for a derisory price and the view from its summit terrace is interesting! Nearby is the Allassac Tourist Office and this is where you can access the Tower.

Right next to it is the church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste d'Allassac (MH), it is of imposing architecture, with its sandstone body and its schist bell tower.

Continuing in the village, you will come across a small square, which houses the Manoir des Tours (MH), it dates from the 16th century, it is flanked by two towers and it is a property of the municipality, which renovated it.

The land of art and history Vézère Ardoise

About fifty municipalities in the region are grouped under this label, which aims to highlight, through events and heritage restoration, the exploitation of slate and its use in traditional Corrézienne architecture. The slate quarries of Corrèze knew an economic peak and a great recognition of the know-how of the Ardoisiers, in the 19th century. The Vézère Valley and the Bassin de Brive are very representative of the use of slate in architecture. Donzenac, Allassac, Saint-Robert , Ségur-le-Château, are all examples of villages that are part of the labeled territory... The particular geology also gives rise to characteristic landscapes that you will find while walking on the heights of Ayen (in the Yssandonnais) and the Vézère Valley, the Saillant, etc. To find out more, visit the Label Pays d'Art et d'Histoire Vézère Ardoise website, which will give you information on how to take advantage of the tourist, heritage and landscape attractions in the region.

What to do in Allassac?

We visited the town, now it's time to take the car or a bike to explore the natural sites of Allassac!

  • First of all, if it's summer, why not cool off at the Pont du Saillant? You can take advantage of the Vézère and sit on its banks while admiring the magnificent 14th century bridge. There are games for children and not very deep, you can swim easily.

  • A little higher, you will enjoy a very beautiful point of view at the Site de la Roche. A pleasant natural space for a walk or to do some sport…

  • And yes ! This is where the Via Ferrata du Saillant is located, one of the two Via Ferattas in Corrèze (the other is in Argentat). Equip yourself at the Tourist Office or in your favorite sports shop and let's go! It is not very difficult, agile children who are not afraid of heights can try it with their parents.

  • There is also the Clan gorges and waterfalls site, which is a great place for a family outing. Waterfalls and waterfalls follow one another over nearly 2km, following a landscaped path.

  • You can go for a walk and enjoy the picnic tables and a playground, on the newly developed site of Garavet on the banks of the Vézère. In summer, animations take place and you can rent Stand Up Paddle, do archery...

We hope to have made you want to spend a holiday in Allassac! Goodbye !
