The beauty of Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne is inscribed in its name as well as in history! Nestled on a forest hillside on the banks of the Dordogne river (on the right bank), it breathes the sweetness of life. It is also nicknamed “the Limousine Riviera” and the luxuriant and exotic vegetation found there will not contradict this nickname… Is there a microclimate? This is not to displease holidaymakers who will find many leisure and sports activities to practice there, in addition to the pleasure of lazing along its sunny quays. In terms of visits, Beaulieu can be enjoyed peacefully... Stroll through its medieval streets with half-timbered houses (especially Rue Sainte-Catherine), its surprising turrets, visit the Abbey of Saint-Pierre, look up at the exceptional work represented by its engraved tympanum. Your steps will take you to the quays, ideal for a walk, eating an ice cream, admiring the lights of the village which are reflected in the waters. Here is also the Chapel of the Penitents, which dates from the 12th century.
Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne seduces for its gastronomy. If the vines covered the hillsides in the 9th century, the spearhead of the city today is the strawberry. The gariguette is a highly anticipated sweetness from the month of May. The nature of the soil and the mild climate give it a sweet flavor that awakens the taste buds as much as spring! Find strawberries and other vegetables and local specialties on Wednesday mornings at the weekly market in Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne.
Not to be missed during your visit:
- A trip in a Gabarre on "Adèle et Clarisse", to go back in time to the 19th century when the gabarriers traveled on the Dordogne from Limousin to Libourne. These flat-bottomed boats allowed them to load a large quantity of goods, even very heavy ones, while being able to sail on a shallow draft. A breathtaking view of the city awaits you from the waves.
- Discover the surroundings of Beaulieu by hiking or mountain biking, several hiking trails leave from the city and the surrounding nature is sumptuous.
- It is possible to go canoeing from Beaulieu in season, it's a great way to tame the Dordogne, at your own pace!
- Arriving in the town, you will notice the Aubarèdes footbridge, providing access to the other bank of the Dordogne. There is also an island opposite, offering very beautiful views of Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne, especially at the end of the day...
- For the little adventurers, a Tèrra Aventura circuit is available in the city. Check out the app. Download the Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne visit map (fr) to organize your walk.
Focus on Saint-Pierre Abbey: This is one of the essential religious buildings in Corrèze. Intimately linked to Archbishop Rodolphe-de-Turenne, Beaulieu, which was part of his land, was chosen for the construction of a Benedictine Abbey, of which Saint-Pierre Abbey is the church and the only vestige. Admire the engraved tympanum of the church and its message of peace, of unification through a Christ, arms open and outstretched towards Men. Go inside to admire the Virgin and Child from the 12th century.
