The small town of Corrèze, which bears the same name as the department which hosts it, is charming and will be perfect for a short stroll and a break in one of its cafes or restaurants. Located south of Monédières, it is so named because the river of the same name crosses it! You will see strong houses dating back to the Middle Ages, tight streets, developed around its Saint-Martial church. Here we go ?

Corrèze, a city that belonged to the Royal family of France!

The first traces of occupation of Corrèze date back to the Gallo-Roman period. In the Middle Ages, Corrèze developed around its church and several bourgeois houses were built there. This growth benefited from the municipal franchises (privileges) granted to the inhabitants of the town by Charles V. The Renaissance period was also conducive to the development of the city which is complete with bourgeois houses, the notables enjoy Corrèze. It is for this reason that today, while walking through the village, we are pleasantly surprised by these beautiful stones and the elegance of the entire heart of the town.

Admire the imposing bell tower of the Saint-Martial church, remodeled but of Romanesque origin. It is accessed by crossing the Porte Margot, an ancient city gate (which had a fortified enclosure to protect the inhabitants and their property). The stone corbels show the location of the old parapet walk and the machicolation, confirming the defensive function of the work.

While admiring the decorative tympanums on the doors of noble houses, you will often see scallop shells. Indeed, Corrèze is on the way to Santiago de Compostela. It is the route from Rocamadour in Limousin and Haut-Quercy which passes through the town. Walk to the Notre-Dame du Pont du Salut Chapel. It dates from the 15th century and each year, the polychrome virgin it houses is venerated there through a pilgrimage on September 8. La Chapelle is located next to the “ chapel bridge ” (it dates from the 18th century ), which spans the Corrèze.
