It peaks at 977m… almost 1000 and to reach them, an observation tower was installed at its summit. Let's explore Mont Bessou, friendly and hilly. In this region of the Plateau de Millevaches Regional Natural Park, we breathe, we admire beautiful landscapes and we put on our sports shoes to go hiking or mountain biking, cycling, in short, we get active ! Lets' go !

Mont Bessou, the highest point of Limousin

It is located in the town of Meymac which is one of the gateways to the Regional Natural Park (the PNR), Mont Bessou is also one of the peaks of the central massif. We have known it since elementary school and advertisements for mineral waters, the central massif is ancient volcanoes, an old mountain range and that is why it is not as high as the Alps or the Pyrenees. We therefore leave Meymac to climb to the summit of Mont Bessous. You can of course come by walking along the hiking trails, but if you prefer there is a car park created a few minutes' walk from the panoramic tower.

It is located on an open meadow, offering a very pretty view of the central massif, the mountains of Auvergne, Cantal and Puy-de-Dome. You don't recognize them ? Don't panic, climb to the top of the panoramic tower to enjoy the more than 180 degree orientation table which will explain the name and specifics of all the peaks present. In all seasons, it is beautiful and in winter, we readily see snow from November onwards.

If you want to take a short walk, know that two marked trails with interpretation panels are available around the meadow. The Mushroom Trail and the Granite Trail.

To discover nearby

Here you are at the gates of the PNR and to take advantage of it, we recommend visiting the following places :

  • On the way down, pass through the Viaduc des Farges in a forest which will remind you of Canada, a large Douglas fir grove, among the highest in Europe.
  • Nearby, come and visit the Tourbières de Longeyroux, an astonishing environment, covered in peat, this black earth, almost fossilized and rich in anaerobics, which teems with curious life.
  • The Gallo-Roman Site of Cars is freely accessible, but we recommend that you take the guided tour option. Because the remains of these Gallo-Roman ruins are fascinating and deserve a few hours of your stay to be deciphered!
  • Want some nice hikes? Direction Saint-Merd-les-Oussines to take walks along the Vézère, near the Oussines pond.
  • The abandoned village of Clédat awaits you. On a guided tour it's nicer, on a visit at dusk alone, it's quite mysterious... We like both!
