5 hikes you absolutely must do in Corrèze
The GR trails on the Way of St. James
The Way of St. James (Camino de Santiago) crosses France from end to end and leads you to Spain. On the Puy-en-Velay route, you follow the GR65, passing through Rocamadour. This route, opened by the monks of Rocamadour in the 12th century, was largely forgotten for a long time before being recently restored. It covers 184 kilometers in the Corrèze region and takes you past some beautiful religious sites, such as the Chapel of Notre-Dame-du-Pont-du-Salut, on the banks of the Corrèze River.
Several portions are available around:
- Collonges-la-Rouge ;
- Tulle ;
- Treignac ;
- Aubazine.
Hiking in the Dordogne Valley
The Dordogne River meanders through the Corrèze region, near Argentat-sur-Dordogne, before forming the border between the Corrèze and Cantal departments. The valley carved by the river is magnificent, with a dramatic landscape. A 200-kilometer hiking trail allows you to explore it. It's quite challenging, with significant elevation changes. The Dordogne basin in Corrèze is a favorite destination for long-distance hikers, especially trail runners. Several dams dot the river, offering an opportunity to better understand the significance of these remarkable structures.
Nature walks on the Millevaches Plateau
If you're looking for easier walks, we recommend the Millevaches Plateau. In a verdant setting, between meadows and forests, numerous trails crisscross the plateau. It's a protected area, designated a Regional Natural Park. While its primary purpose is to preserve local flora and fauna, another surprise awaits you: it has been classified as an International Dark Sky Reserve (IDSR). It's a world of moors and peat bogs that offer a truly unique and exotic experience. You'll also encounter charming streams and springs, small traditional heritage sites, and pastures stretching as far as the eye can see!
" Heritage " walks on the Causse Corrézien
The Causse Corrézien extends from the Causse de Martel, on the border between the Lot and Corrèze departments. It's an area of lakes and forests. Near Brive-la-Gaillarde, a 14-kilometer hike takes you through three emblematic villages of the Causse: Chasteaux, Saint-Cernin-de-Larche, and Lissac-sur-Couze. Lovers of old stones will be delighted by its small Romanesque chapels, the ruins of Couzages Castle, and many other vestiges of the past. Don't forget to take a stroll around the Lac du Causse and go for a swim or try your hand at fishing!
On the edge of the Causse, there are also many other typical villages of the Corrèze, such as Uzerche, Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne or Aubazine, which are really worth a visit and are photo spots, appreciated by amateur photographers.
A family walk, to please the children
To get children walking, nothing beats spicing up the outing with a few surprises. Older children will enjoy the puzzles at Randoland. In Corrèze, there's something for all levels and tastes, with no fewer than 16 trails!
Younger children will likely be more motivated by the little treasures of Geocaching. The Tèrra Aventura website offers a route " in the footsteps of millers of yesteryear ", starting from the village of Corrèze.
The Corrèze tourist office also offers orienteering courses suitable for all ages. Different levels of difficulty are available, allowing the whole family to try these games and then progress at their own pace.
Don't miss the Pig Trail, a very fun walk, perfect for families, that will delight children and lovers of charcuterie... and films! Have we piqued your interest?
